Our patient feels worn out. Whether it’s the physical, financial or emotional stress — or a combination of all three — she needs a break. Realize that this worrier can become a warrior with the right support. Listen to and understand what she is experiencing and offer her the path she needs to leave for the moment — and then return to your care.
Say this:
“It’s OK to take a break until you’re ready to resume treatment or consider new options. In the meantime, I’m happy to connect you with support staff that can work through your concerns and feelings around this. One thing I know is that when and if you’re ready to try again, we can help you have a baby—even if it’s not the way you imagined.”
Not that:
“You need to keep trying now. Your age is an issue.”
“We left because we were not getting enough answers for why things weren’t working. Also, they wanted to do the same treatment for my second IVF treatment and I felt that it was a waste of time to repeat what didn’t work the first time… We did 6 IUIs and 1 IVF… I didn’t know about treatments or options for DOR. I was tired.”
