Scenario 5: Foster Hope
In this video, patients talk about how they feel seen by their fertility teams. Like many we surveyed, they’ve been on their fertility journeys for years and have known many emotional highs and lows. At certain points, the emotional lows can take over and the resulting fatigue they feel can cause them to give up on fertility treatments as a whole. In this video, we also hear from Pregnantish Advisory Board member Dr. Serena Chen from IRMS, who knows that physician burnout is a reality, too.
As many women who have been trying to conceive told us in the Real Talk survey:
“I give up.”
Using the 4 “E”s Protocol, how can we reframe how we see this patient? Could this worrier become a warrior with the right support?
Think: Acknowledge that there are several factors involved or that need to be considered regarding the patient’s situation, even if the patient has “unexplained infertility,” or an effort didn’t work.
Acknowledge that the process is a tiring marathon and that it’s OK to take a break or go at your own pace. Let the patient know that you and your team haven’t given up on them, even if they’ve lost hope for the moment.
